Perhaps in childhood you were often told by your parents that you should always chew well – extensively and in peace. But why? We explain what is behind it and how you really chew.

Why is it important to chew properly?

You have probably heard the saying “well chewed well”. And that is actually quite true, because chewing is important for preparation and inserting digestion. By crushing the food, more space is created on which the enzymes can work in our saliva. In addition, thorough chewing serves to swallow your food safely.

It also brings further advantages if we chew properly:

  • Improve digestion: Digestion is one of the processes in your body that consumes the most energy. If you chew your meal thoroughly, you can help your digestive system to break it down. In addition, the chewing enzymes that stimulate digestion are given.

  • Nutrient absorption: In addition, your body can better absorb the nutrients it contains from thoroughly chewed food.

Proper chewing is good for your health. So that you can train yourself to chew properly, you can get the following tips:

  • Take the time to consciously eat and not be hasty. You can also take breaks while eating. Also sit down to eat.

  • Concentrate on eating and chewing and at best do not let yourself be distracted. For example, try to focus on the taste and texture of the food and consciously enjoy it.
  • Take small bite and don’t overload your spoon or fork. Take a short break after every bit.
  • Chew thoroughly. Expert: On average, it recommends chewing each bite 32 times. Some foods need more, some less. Rule of thumb: If the food has lost its texture, you can swallow it.
  • Your mouth should be closed, your tongue should move the food from one side to the other and your jaw should be easily rotated. Make sure that you bare evenly on both sides.

To train the right chewing, you can practice with hard and unprocessed foods, for example with raw food. Your chewing muscles get used to the right movement over time.
