Does this animation reveal the design of the Google Nest Hub tablet?

An animation has leaked of the Tap to Transfer function from Android 13. We see in it that a phone and a smart display, only the smart display looks familiar. It’s reminiscent of Google’s new Nest Hub with a detachable screen that is rumored to be.

Google Nest Hub Tablet

In 2020, Google last released a Nest Hub smart display, the second generation to come with sleep analytics features. Google now has plans for a new smart display, according to rumors, only that device will have a detachable screen that you can carry with you like a tablet.

We haven’t seen any renders or photos of that upcoming product yet, but we may now be getting the first glimpse of what it will look like. 9To5Google took a look at the code of the latest beta version of Google Play Services and there it found an animation of a smart display that also closely resembles a tablet.

Tap to Transfer

We see that the smart display that Google uses in the animation apparently has a power button, like a tablet. Furthermore, the build of the device looks like the screen is in a dock, but can also be removed. According to the rumors, Google will use a dock to charge the tablet from the smart display and it will also serve as a speaker.

The conscious animation of the smart display

The animation is part of the Tap to Transfer function, which will be part of Android 13. When you play music on a phone, you can transfer the sound to a smart display or smart speaker by holding your phone close to it. That works via ultra-wideband and that is a technology that is not present with Google’s current smart displays. So it seems that the animation refers to a new product.

Is this the next Nest Hub?

Now the question is whether Google actually used an image of its upcoming smart display in the animation. Google does have a habit of incorporating renders of its own phones and smart displays into Android software, usually in menus.

You could also argue that Google is referring to a generic product category with this animation instead, but very few smart displays with such a design have appeared yet. One is the Lenovo Smart TabM8, which is an Android tablet with its own dock that the Google Assistant can use when it’s docked. But it seems implausible that Google would base an animation for a feature from Android 13 on a third-party tablet already released in 2020. That tablet also works without ultra-wideband technology.

So we are more inclined to assume that it is indeed a new Nest Hub from Google. That product should be introduced in the fall, as the company always does with new smarthome devices. Further details and information about price and availability are not available for the time being. What do you think of the idea of a tablet and smart display in one?
