Mario is busy on iOS. After running around with sweat on his forehead in Super Mario Run, he will soon be able to race and throw bananas in Mario Kart Tour. In addition, he now has to put on a white doctor’s coat to throw pills at viruses in puzzle game Dr. Mario World.
The game is based on the Dr. Mario games that have appeared for the NES, Game Boy and Nintendo 64, among others. The makers have made some major changes in this smartphone version. Instead of big fields in which Mario throws pills from top to bottom, Dr. Mario World makes the puzzles a little smaller and the pills climb from bottom to top.
Candy Crush
The game is reminiscent of Candy Crush and other titles in which you have to make three in a row to remove blocks. This time, the color of the pills must match that of the viruses.
Usually your goal is to defeat all viruses in a level, but there are also other goals, such as finding all the hidden coins. To make it more difficult for you, all kinds of obstacles are placed in the levels. Think of blocks that you have to clear first. There are also levels in which the viruses keep coming, so you don’t have to waste time.
In addition, items are quickly introduced to give you an advantage, such as a hammer. Of course, these items are mainly hidden behind microtransactions. That is also a big change compared to the original. dr. Mario World has three types of currencies: hearts, crystals and coins. Hearts are the most important, because once they run out you can’t continue playing.
In-app purchases
Initially you will have plenty of hearts, but later on with the more difficult levels that number drops quickly. Then it becomes more tempting to buy hearts, a continuous (which gives you another stack of pills), or purchase items to make the levels easier. You buy with diamonds, which you in turn buy with real money (in packages from 2.29 euros to no less than 74.99 euros).
Of course, arbitrariness also comes into play. For example, in the special power of each character. If you defeat enough viruses, you can do a special attack. This is how Dr. Peach an entire column on the playing field, and removes Dr. Luigi blocks in an L-shape. However, you cannot choose where. Who knows, maybe a level will succeed next time.
Unlock characters
New characters with their own powers or bonuses can be unlocked with coins, diamonds or a ticket as soon as you have completed a world. These characters are probably the biggest motivation for players to keep playing. However, unlocking happens randomly. So it is quite possible that you will get characters that you already have. If you want to collect everyone, you will be busy for a long time or you will have to pay a lot.
A fun part of the game is the versus mode, where you can use these characters. Then the game pits you against a random other player or one of your friends. Suddenly you can no longer calmly hand out pills as if you were at a music festival, but you have to react quickly to outsmart the opponent. If you remove viruses, the other person will have a harder time.
Please note that you constantly need an internet connection to play the game. Not just for playing multiplayer mode.
Conclusion Dr. Mario World
dr. Mario World is not the most exciting Nintendo game. First of all, it takes quite a while until the puzzles become interesting. Once that has happened, the pressure to make in-app purchases increases too quickly. If you want to do a puzzle every now and then, Dr. Mario World is a great game. In the longer term, however, there are better games available in this category. Nintendo relies too much on its endearing characters in this case, but that’s not enough.
