Gherkins taste good and go well with many dishes. Unfortunately, the liquid from the pickle jar often ends up in the drain as soon as the pickles are eaten. Drinking cucumber water is actually quite healthy and may even act as a herbal remedy.

Pickle water is far too good to just throw away. The liquid still contains many valuable ingredients – and also has several positive effects:

Drink cucumber water: remedy for muscle cramps

The liquid essentially consists of vinegar, herbs and spices. This is the ideal combination against muscle cramps – at least according to a study from the specialist magazine “Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise”.

According to the study, the water should reduce the activity of the impulse-giving nerve cells and thus have an antispasmodic effect. The researchers write that anyone who drinks pickle water during an acute cramp can reduce the duration of the tension by almost half. They recommend one milliliter of cucumber water per kilogram of weight – or just a good sip of the liquid.

A physiotherapist told the “Pharmazeutische Zeitung” that cucumber water can even prevent cramps if taken for a long time. However, there is still no scientifically proven knowledge about this.

You should drink a lot after a workout – in addition to water, pickle water is also recommended. The liquid contains sodium and potassium, which are electrolytes that the body loses when you sweat. In the USA you can even buy “Pickle Juice” (“pickle juice”) in bottles:

Strengthen the immune system with cucumber water

The water from the gherkin jar not only contains important electrolytes, but also vitamin C and vitamin E. A positive side effect: the acidity of the water can promote the absorption of these substances.

Natural weight loss aid

Anyone who wants to lose weight can also try gherkin water. According to various studies, vinegar should stimulate digestion, reduce appetite and thus help you lose weight. The gherkin water consists largely of vinegar.

In any case, we recommend buying organic cucumbers. And attention: With some gherkin varieties there is a lot of sugar in the liquid, which is not exactly conducive to health or weight loss. If you want to be on the safe side, you should check the label carefully or simply pickle your cucumbers yourself.

What if I don’t like gherkin water?

While the sour cucumber water has some positive effects, not everyone will be able to get the liquid down. All those who don’t like the water don’t have to throw it away. The liquid is also suitable as a dressing for salads, seasoning for mayonnaise, dips or for pickling.
