Driving is not a cheap story in the Netherlands, but certainly not when you are young. The biggest culprit in that case is car insurance. Money.nl calculated what young people spend on average on such insurance.
From research by Money.nl The various premiums for car insurance have shown that young people aged 18 to 20 pay more than twice as much for insurance as the average. The average premium is €987 per year (roughly €82 per month), but the young people pay an average of €2,180 per year. That equates to a monthly amount of €181.60. In the age of 21 to 24 years, people pay an average of about €1,440 premium per year, or just under €120 per month. Still one and a half times as much as average.
Amanda Bulthuis from Money.nl explains: “The high premiums for young drivers do not only apply if you drive an expensive car or live in a large city. We also looked at a number of specific scenarios and it appears that if you live in Dokkum and drive a Toyota Aygo of 10 years old, you still pay an average of €117 per month for your car insurance as an 18-year-old.”
Young drivers pay more premiums because they have built up little or no claim-free years and they often drive damage claims above average. In that sense it can be explained that they have lost more, but the differences are certainly not tender. Then comes the mrb on top of that and of course the current fuel prices don’t exactly help either. hump house draws a tough conclusion: “It is therefore no longer affordable to drive, especially when you are young. And there is a risk involved, because we also see that young people then choose to insure the car in the name of the parents. But if your parents don’t list you as a regular driver, it’s actually fraud and both the child and the parents will be in serious trouble if the insurer discovers it.”
What can make a difference is if you go for a small, somewhat older car. Bulthuis also advises to check every year which insurance is the cheapest. “The premiums drop considerably every year that you get older, especially if you build up claim-free years. This means that a different car insurance policy can be the cheapest every year.”
