What is standard in the world of electric cars and telephones is finally coming to the e-bike: smart loading to protect the battery and extend the lifespan. With the introduction of the E-Pal SmartPlug, the Dutch startup E-Pal is taking a nice striking step towards more sustainable bicycle use. This smart plug, in combination with a user-friendly app, optimizes the charging process of e-bike batteries so that users can extend the lifespan up to three times. For example, the more than 5 million e-bike users in the Netherlands can make and save by smart charging.

Batteries from e-bikes are expensive
More than 450,000 electric bicycles are purchased every year* in the Netherlands. Because many users incorrectly charge their battery, the lifespan is drastically shortened. Currently, the average e-bike battery has a lifespan around 3 to 4 years and a replacement battery costs many hundreds of euros. Manufacturers of electric cars and telephones have built in technology, so that the battery is used as much as possible between 80% and 40% to extend the battery life. Bicycle battery manufacturers do not use this technology, which means that owners of electric bicycles need a new battery faster.

Smart and simple solution
The lifespan is negatively influenced because users use their e-bike battery to 100% and/or use the battery below 40%. E-Pal prevents these problems due to a smart loading function that optimizes loading.
The E-Pal plug is placed between the original battery charger and the socket. He switches himself off after 75%, but all the time you can keep the smart plug in the socket and the plug of the charger into the battery, even after you have removed the charger from the battery. Your charger can therefore always remain in the plug, regardless of whether the charger is connected to the battery.
The device is then controlled via the app, which analyzes use and calculates the optimum charging percentage. In addition to loading optimization and insight into the user data, the app also offers other functions, such as the possibility of planning loading and a winter mode. In this way, E-PAL prevents overheating and overload, which means that batteries last longer and replacement costs are postponed.
