Rotary motor increases driving range
Mazda MX-30
The electric Mazda MX-30 will soon also come in a version with range extender. It is a so-called rotary engine, which Mazda applies to a production model for the first time since the RX-8.
Lovers of the so-called rotary engine can be delighted. The special engine returns, but not quite in the shape as you might expect. This time it is not a sports car in which the distinctive technology is used, but an electric SUV. The engine will be used in the MX-30 as a range extender, an auxiliary engine to increase the driving range.
Mazda has experimented with this concept before. In 2013, the brand presented a working prototype of an electric Mazda 2 with rotary engine as a range extender. That model did not go into production, but Mazda continued to develop the technology afterwards.
The Mazda MX-30 in its current form has a 35.5 kWh battery pack, good for a range of 200 kilometers. It is not yet known whether the version with Range Extender will be equipped with a smaller battery.
