Elon Musk: ‘New Tesla Roadster can fly’

Literally or figuratively?

Tesla Roadster

Does Tesla CEO Elon Musk see them flying? That just depends on what you mean by ‘they’. When it comes to the Tesla Roadster, you seem to be able to answer that question in the affirmative. According to Elon Musk, the new Tesla Roadster can fly. This further intensifies the Roadster madness.

Tesla started its EV adventure in 2008 with the Roadster. A completely new Tesla Roadster was announced in 2017, but anyone who walks into a Tesla Store now will not encounter it there. After all, the new Roadster is still not for sale and its arrival has already been postponed several times. As it stands now, the Roadster should really make its public debut at the end of this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk launched the preview of the Roadster about seven years ago with the necessary superlatives and there are certainly no fewer. At the beginning of this year, Musk indicated that the Tesla Roadster could launch itself from a standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in less than one second. Initially, the Roadster would do that job in a decidedly not spine-friendly 1.9 seconds. According to Musk, who is particularly talkative on X, the 0-100 time would not even be the most remarkable thing about the car. That is now gaining momentum, because the new Roadster could fly.

This is what Elon Musk says in a response to However, Musk previously hinted at a ‘flight function’ for the new Roadster. In 2021, Musk already indicated that he was investigating whether the Roadster could receive a ‘SpaceX’ package that includes thrusters for the car. This would allow the Tesla Roadster to float up to about one and a half meters above the ground. At the beginning of this year, Elon Musk indicated that the introduction of the Roadster could be “the most stunning product demonstration of all time”. A floating Roadster would fit in perfectly. Is such a floating Roadster also street legal? We have a hard time about it. If Tesla keeps its word, the new Roadster should see the light of day at the end of this year, with the first units hitting the road in 2025.
