Belgian bank KBC is the first bank in the Benelux to start offering the new Wero payment system. This is what you need to know.
Wero has started, but not in the Netherlands
It has been known for some time that the new European payment system Wero (a contraction of ‘We’ and ‘Euro’) is coming. It was also known that the service would first be rolled out in Belgium, France and Germany. The Belgian bank KBC is now the first. KBC employees can already use Wero, all customers will follow from the end of July.

What is Wero payment system?
Wero is the new European payment service that will replace the current Dutch service iDEAL. The service was introduced by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a partnership of 16 European banks and payment institutions. Wero is designed as a digital wallet and will be available to both consumers and merchants across Europe.
Wero offers several advantages, including fast and easy payments within Europe without complicated forms or codes. This will also make it a competitor to the ‘tikkie’ that is so popular here. The system uses advanced encryption and authentication techniques to ensure the security of the data, including fingerprint and facial recognition for authentication. In addition, Wero gives users full control over their data.
Payment system Wero supports various types of transactions, such as subscriptions, payments in installments, and reservations. The goal of Wero is to create a uniform payment platform that can compete with big players such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal, and to facilitate payments within (and between) European borders.

When is it the Netherlands’ turn?
EPI recently announced that it has also started rolling out Wero in Germany and that Wero will also be available in France in the fall. The initial plan was to roll out Wero in the Netherlands in 2025, but that expectation has now been revised. It will probably take until early 2026 before you can use Wero in the Netherlands and iDeal will disappear from the scene for good.
