Europe’s best-selling cars in 2021

Volkswagen Golf VIII

European car sales did not do too well in 2021. Compared to an already dramatic 2020, sales of new cars fell further last year. Which models most often rolled out of the showroom in 2021? Data collector JATO Dynamics lists the best-selling brands and models.

Compared to 2020, the total number of registrations for the 25 Member States of the European Union together with the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland decreased by 1.6 percent compared to 2020. European trade association ACEA, which with only the member states of the European Union came to a minus of 2.4 percent. This is mainly because the United Kingdom managed to achieve a 1 percent plus in car sales in 2021, Switzerland increased by 0.6 percent and Norway registered no less than 24 percent more cars than in 2020.

Sales Europe

Last year, Volkswagen performed best in Europe. The brand sold 1,273,892 cars and the Volkswagen Golf became the best-selling car in Europe with 205,408 newly registered units. The entire Volkswagen Group accounts for a market share of more than 25 percent. In terms of market share, Stellantis comes in second with over 20 percent, followed by Groupe Renault with over 9 percent. Peugeot is in the top list of brands with 727,973 cars in second place behind Volkswagen, but Toyota follows Peugeot closely with 706,056 cars. The biggest climber in the list of brands is Tesla with a plus of 70.9 percent. The biggest dip is for Ford with -19.2% compared to 2020.

The list also shows how the various manufacturers and models are performing compared to 2019, the year in which the corona virus had no effect on car sales. Then you see, for example, that sales of the Volkswagen Golf have fallen by no less than 50 percent compared to 2019. Even compared to 2020, the Golf is not in very good shape with a minus of 27.9 percent, but that does not alter the fact that the top spot of the podium is for that model. The Golf is followed by the Peugeot 208 and the Dacia Sandero, with the latter a plus of 16.9 percent compared to 2020. The biggest riser is the Hyundai Tucson with a plus of 64.3 percent compared to 2020. That is. will undoubtedly have to do with the fact that the new model came on the market last year. The Tesla Model 3 also shows strong growth at 64 percent.

Difference with the Netherlands

If we look at the Dutch ranking of 2021, it is noticeable that Volkswagen is leading the way as a brand in both the Netherlands and Europe, but the list is completely different. In our country, for example, Kia is doing very good business with the Niro and the Picanto, which are in place 1 and 4 in the top list of models in our country. Kia cannot be found in the top list for Europe at all among the models, the Koreans are in eleventh place among the brands. The Skoda Enyaq iV, with us good for fifth place, is also not among the European sales toppers.
