Extremely quiet on the road due to corona measures and Christmas

It was remarkably quiet on the Dutch roads last week. Normally, the Christmas holidays already take care of that, but now the corona measures were added.

Last week there was hardly any morning or evening rush hour, the traffic information services of Rijkswaterstaat and the ANWB say in conversation with NU.nl. It is much quieter on the road at this time of year. This is reinforced by the tightened corona measures this month.

On Thursday, at the busy time of the week, there was 25 kilometers of traffic jams in our country, says the ANWB. A week earlier, that was 386 kilometers of traffic jams. Friday morning will be traffic-free for the time being. In the period before corona, twice as many kilometers of traffic jams were not unusual, so it is certainly even quieter than usual at this time of the year.

Rijkswaterstaat saw a similar picture on the national roads in our country in the past week. “In the morning rush hour this week there was an average of about 10 to 12 kilometers of traffic jams, while a week earlier this was still about 80 kilometers. In the evening rush hour it was still relatively busy with an average of 100 kilometers, but that is due to the influence of the weather not uncommon at this time of year.”

Rijkswaterstaat has seen things calm down on the road since the corona press conference on 12 November. That traffic picture remained stable until this week. In September and October, on the other hand, it was almost as busy as before for the first time since the start of the corona crisis.
