Eyeball #25: Spark is the best mail app for iPhone, iPad and Mac

Since Inbox by Gmail disappeared, Spark has been my favorite mail app for iOS and macOS. This is why you should give the app a chance too.

Spark Mail review

When Inbox by Gmail disappeared at the beginning of this year, I was forced to look for an alternative mail app. Inbox did certain things really well. For example, the app independently grouped newsletters and advertisements, so that you could browse and delete them faster.

That’s also the main reason I gave Spark a chance. This app also lends you a hand by distinguishing between important and less important emails. The app does this with a special switch at the top of the app, with which you switch between the regular inbox and ‘Smart Inbox’. The smart version puts important and personal emails at the top, so you don’t accidentally overlook them.

The major update that developer Readdle released this week builds on this. Spark now supports iOS 13’s dark mode and you can activate avatars. These give each e-mail its own profile picture, so that you can see even faster which messages are worth opening and which can be moved directly to the trash.

In addition to this smart inbox, Spark is also just as smart with notifications. The mail app has a handy setting that first checks with every email whether it is worth sending you a notification. In this way, promotional emails will quietly appear in your inbox, but you will receive a notification for the response to that one important email.

What makes Spark so good is the freedom the app gives you to tailor the app to your preferences down to the smallest detail. You will notice this with the smart inbox and notifications, but also with options to, for example, set what happens when you swipe an email to the left or right. For example, I’ve set Spark to move emails directly to the trash with a swipe to the right, and archive with a swipe to the left to save them.

In the same way, you can set custom replies to your liking, schedule emails in the future, manage your mailbox with a partner or colleague, and use the built-in calendar to schedule appointments. That makes Spark a very comprehensive app, but only if you need it. If you just want a simple but smart mail app, you can start using the application without spending time in the settings.

Add to that the fact that the app is completely free to use and is available on iOS, macOS and watchOS, so that you will encounter the same layout of your inbox everywhere. The design of the application is also of a high level, with a clear layout and colored categories that you can quickly recognize.
