Eyeball #28: Create your own Wikipedia with Notion

Notion is an ideal app for organizing large amounts of information. Moreover, by mutually referencing within documents, you can easily create your own information system, à la Wikipedia. In this review of Notion we tell you all about it.

Notion review

Notion is a versatile and powerful app for organizing information. In addition to a place to store notes, you can also create entire projects and, for example, create focus areas.

You can then attach tasks here and share them with others, such as classmates or colleagues. To save time, the app has prepared various templates so that you can quickly conjure up an agenda, source list or complete roadmap on your screen.

You can also link Notion with other apps, such as Google Drive, Asana and Microsoft Word. Another useful feature is the ability to link between pages in Notion. By doing this consistently, you are essentially building your own Wikipedia. In this way, companies can, for example, share complete induction guides, rules of conduct, regulations and declaration forms with each other.

Overwhelming

Notion describes itself as the all-in-one workspace for notes, to-do lists and wikis. This is not a lie: the program is very complete. There is nothing wrong with this, but it does create a blockage. In this Notion review there is therefore room for a critical note: the app is quite overwhelming. The unorganized layout only reinforces this overwhelming effect.

For example, it is not immediately clear where it is best to write notes. Do you create a new notebook for this? Or are you going to divide notes by subject? Or do you opt for a separation between work and private life? Finally, you can also create order out of chaos by means of tags: how does that work? Notion gives you carte blanche And that’s not always nice, in my opinion.

So you have to determine how you are going to set up your note system. Notion lets you make a lot of choices, but it doesn’t do this explicitly. It does mean that you really have to learn how to use the app and that takes time. However, I am glad I made this investment. Once you get the hang of it, everything works perfectly.

Conclusion

For example, I used Notion to the fullest during my thesis. Thanks to the powerful program, I was able to make notes for each scientific article, organize them on the basis of the two subprojects that I researched and then link them back to the sub-questions of my thesis. To top it off, the notes were shared with my supervisor so he could keep an eye on the progress.

So you can make it as colorful as you want with Notion. However, if you’re looking for a more straightforward note-taking app, it’s still worth a try. Notion is free for individual users and thanks to the automatic synchronization you always have notes at hand. Companies pay a fixed monthly fee per user.
