Facelift Friday: Mitsubishi Space Star

After eight years of absence, Mitsubishi dusts off an old name in 2013. The Space Star is back, but according to a completely different concept than we were used to from the brand. The “shopping car” has meanwhile been facelifted. Note: not once, but twice!

In 1998, Mitsubishi welcomed the Space Star for the first time. As a compact station wagon, the car even gets a hint of MPV. After a facelift in 2002, the car disappears from the market for three years and it remains anxiously quiet around its name. In 2013, however, the model name returns on the tailgate of a much more compact car. With its standard five-door, the Space Star operates high in the A-segment in terms of format. The car will last three years before Mitsubishi provides it with a facelift for the first time (photo 3). The mainly round happy key makes way for a new grille and front bumper. The designers work with significantly more chrome-plated trim parts. The logo is stuck in the grille, a wide X-shaped decorative strip marks the front bumper. The lighting is also being tackled all around.

The first facelift will last from 2016 until the beginning of this year. Now the again facelifted Space Star (photo 4) is coming to the Dutch dealers. The front was again kicked in, but is now being tackled more vigorously. Every part is being tackled and replaced. The nose is drawn according to Mitsubishi’s current design style. The ASX drawing board looked at the design of the grille. We see new lights, a continuous black grille and large chrome trim that should accentuate the X shape. The fog lamps each have their own place. The rear is also firmly tackled and can count on new lighting and a new bumper with striking large and upright reflectors.

The interior is not touched in seven years and retains its original lines. Strikingly enough, Mitsubishi cannot find a solution in seven years for the noticeable optional detached “pimple” on the tailgate in which the rear camera is processed. (photo 16) You would expect that there should be a solution for that.
