Perhaps the most irrational Mercedes-Benz you can buy is about to get another, in the best sense of the word, even more absurd version. We are talking about the 4X4², a crazy high-on-the-legs version that we can show you up close together with the facelifted variant of the regular G-class.

Mercedes-Benz is one of those brands with a model range that covers almost every niche. As far as SUVs and high-legged vehicles are concerned, there is logically a lot to choose from. One of the brand’s niche models is the chunky G-class, an angular SUV that, despite the fact that it was completely renovated in 2018 down to the smallest nut, looks like a so-called resto mod of the primal G presented in the late 1970s. That SUV with the aerodynamics of a log cabin is also available as a mighty G 63 AMG, but the brand proves that it can be even more insane by introducing a new 4X4². The launch of that new crazy variant will most likely coincide with the introduction of the facelifted G-class. Thanks to a new set of spy photos shot in Sweden, we can show you both the redesigned G-Class and the new four-times-four-squared up close.

The renewed G-class that you see in these photos has been fanatically covered with camouflage work for a facelifted model. That is striking, because it does not seem that Mercedes-Benz is thoroughly adjusting the appearance of the ‘G’. The changes are unlikely to go further than subtly modified bumpers and detailed lighting. At least, when it comes to the appearance of the square SUV. We aim for the G-class to finally be introduced to the latest version of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system. Whether the terrain executioner gets a large vertical display such as the C and S class? That is possible in theory, although it is quite possible that Mercedes-Benz does not find such a screen that more or less replaces the center console to fit the classic layout of the current G-interior.

The red test sample in these photos is of course the new 4X4², the crazy version of the G-Class that stands extra high on its legs in rough terrain and should be able to hold its own even better. Portal axles, a diverted exhaust system and high ground clearance are well-known 4X4² ingredients. It is still not entirely certain how powerful the 4X4² will be, although it is certain that it will get the well-known biturbo 4.0 V8.

We expect Mercedes-Benz to present the updated G-Class and the new 4X4² variant later this year.
