Various media outlets report that Chrome is currently the most vulnerable of all popular web browsers. Nearly three times as many vulnerabilities have been reported for Chrome, compared to Mozilla Firefox, the second most vulnerable browser. What is true? We explain.
Chrome unsafe?
On various technology news sites you can currently read that Google Chrome is the browser that is currently the most vulnerable browser of the moment. This is according to a study by atlasvpnwhich uses numbers from FillDB. The latter is a well-known database that has been providing an overview of security problems of all kinds of electronic products and online services for more than 20 years.
When you read that 303 vulnerabilities for Chrome have been reported this year, almost three times as many as Firefox’s 117 vulnerabilities, it will make you swallow. Chances are that you too are a Chrome user, because according to recent figures from Statistics Google’s browser has a global market share of more than 65 percent.
the fallacy
But is it right? Is Chrome the most vulnerable and therefore an insecure browser? That is absolutely not what you can conclude from these figures. The fact that Google has reported the most vulnerabilities says nothing about the security of Chrome. On the contrary, it does indicate that the team behind Chrome has discovered most of the problems, and therefore fixed them. Something even more positive.

Otherwise, the reverse would mean that the Opera browser’s security is 100 percent watertight, as no vulnerabilities have been reported by Opera this year. That’s unthinkable, of course, because every tech product faces vulnerabilities as a logical consequence of new features being added and new malware and other threats emerging.
Conclusion
So what can we say about this research? The researchers use reliable data, but it is a mistake to conclude that Chrome is the most vulnerable browser. Not only is there no direct correlation between the number of reported vulnerabilities and a browser’s actual vulnerability, March also notes that some of these supposedly “less vulnerable browsers” even work with Chrome’s code at its core. That’s Microsoft Edge and – yes – Opera in this case.
Alternatives to Chrome
Of course, this is not to say that users have no reason at all to choose an alternative to Chrome, as privacy concerns can be a good motive for making the switch. These are our favorite privacy-friendly browsers. And these are the best browsers overall in our opinion.
Samsung Internet is also an excellent alternative for Samsung phone users, and the browser can now import your bookmarks from Chrome. What is your favorite browser? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
