February sales stable

With a difference of a few dozen cars, February 2020 scored almost identical to the same month last year. The most surprising topper last month was the Kia Niro, the electric version of which not only did well.

Last month, one (Saturday) day counted more than February 2020 and managed to account for 29,868 registrations, according to statistics from the RAI Association and Bovag. That made it 0.003 percent stronger than February 2019, so a negligible difference. Thanks to a shipload from Korea, Kia managed to win both the models and brands top positions. The Niro was registered more than a thousand times, almost half of which was an EV. And not only the Niro was the cause of Kia’s success; the Picanto also found a lot of new owners this month.

Also striking is the Space Star from Mitsubishi, a brand that is not surprisingly often found in the top 10 since the madhouse around the Outlander PHEV. The discounted Opel Ampera-E is also doing great, just like the new Renault Clio, which meant that the well-known winner Volkswagen Polo had to play last month.

Because January, as was to be expected after the December boom, was somewhat weaker, we are now cumulatively at -4.0 percent. Of course it is particularly interesting to see how the EVs are doing now that the addition has gone from 4 to 8 percent. According to Kentekenradar.nl, 2,778 new EVs were registered last month, 9.3 percent of the total number of passenger cars. Cumulatively the electric cars are now at 5.8 percent of the total. That share is therefore on the rise again.

Detailed figures and analysis in Techzle number 11, which appears on Wednesday 11 March.
