It took a while, but the moment has come: Inbox by Gmail has been updated to support the notch of the iPhone X, making black bars a thing of the past.

With this, Google is listening to the criticism of a lot of users, who were very disappointed. Google’s experimental email app has had a whopping 13 updates since the release of the iPhone, but none took into account the X’s notch.

Thanks to the update, the app finally makes good use of the 5.8-inch display, and you no longer see black bars at the top and bottom. Previously, the high-quality OLED screen was canceled out by the coarse bezels. Apart from maybe some bug fixes, no other features have been added to Inbox. All in all, it took eight months for the app to support the notch.

The update comes at a good time as some Inbox users feared for the continued existence of the app. For example, Gmail has recently been given a fresh look and new functions, while Inbox has been omitted. This while it is normally the other way around. When a function catches on with Inbox users, you often see it in the Gmail app after a while.

Mandatory support for iPhone X

Earlier, Apple already announced that it is forcing new apps to take the notch into account. In this way the above situations must be prevented. However, the measure does not apply to existing apps. Therefore, there are still programs and games that do not take the notch into account.
