Apple announced the new iPhone feature Tap to Pay in February, where you use your iPhone as a payment terminal. A video that has surfaced shows that Apple is already testing the feature at the Apple Park Visitor Center.
iPhone feature Tap to Pay
With an iPhone, it has been possible for a few years now to make contactless payments via Apple Pay. Soon you will also be able to receive contactless payments with your device, with the so-called ‘Tap to Pay’. Your iPhone acts as a card reader.
Apple will launch the feature in the United States later this year, but is already testing it at the Apple Park Visitor Center. This is evident from a video shared on Twitter.
The video shows a store employee activating the Tap to Pay feature. The iPhone screen shows the amount owed of $56.75, with the text ‘Hold here to Pay’ above it. The customer then only has to hold the iPhone with Apple Pay nearby to make the contactless payment.
When is the release?
Tap to Pay will be launched sometime this year. An exact date is not yet known: this may happen with the release of iOS 16 in September. The feature will initially only be rolled out in the United States. It is not yet known when Tap to Pay will come to the Netherlands.
Tap to Pay is ideal for small retailers who do not need to purchase an expensive payment terminal. Or how about private sellers on Marktplaats, or at a flea market. Incidentally, it was already possible to accept payments with an iPhone, but in combination with an accessory, such as the Square Reader.
