Fluctuating traffic in 2020 due to corona

Due to corona, we moved much less in the past year than the year before. Figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) show that just before the Netherlands had to deal with a major corona outbreak, the virus already restricted our travel on the road.

Traffic on the road (including truck traffic) started to decline from the beginning of March compared to the corresponding week last year. Traffic fell faster on weekends than on weekdays. On the weekends in late March and early April, traffic was only 35 percent of that on the corresponding weekends a year earlier. During the week, a minimum was reached in the second week of April, when traffic was only half that of a year earlier.

From mid-April it got a bit busier again, back to the level of last year. From the end of September it fell again slightly, compared to 2019, but at the end of the year the ‘traffic intensity’ during the week was around 80 percent of last year. It is expected that after corona the traffic volume will increase again, but the loss of time will remain limited. The Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy stated in November that this may only be at the level of 2019 in 2025. Continued working from home and traveling outside of rush hour plays the decisive role in this.
