For the first time, more pickups than cars sold in the US

While record after record is dying because of the consequences of the corona crisis, there is again a very special historical fact in the United States. In April, for the first time in history, more pick-ups than regular cars were sold.

Pickups are extremely popular in the United States. Always has been. But as popular as it is today has never been seen before. In recent years, pickups have been gaining ground over regular passenger cars in the US, but according to Bloomberg, Autodata Corporation market figures show that for the first time more pickups were sold than passenger cars in April. That is a historical revolution.

The figures show that the pick-ups have reached the first place with a margin of about 17,000 copies on passenger cars. Analysts think Bloomberg believes part of the success can be explained by long-term interest-free loans that American brands are now offering to boost sales in these times of crisis. Since the model range of the ‘Big Three’ largely consists of pick-ups, this quickly leads to a larger share of pick-ups sold.

Another factor may be that the east and west coasts are both largely in a lockdown, while public life in the middle of the US is even less still. That is the part of the country where the pick-up is by far the most popular. There is therefore a chance that this revolution will not last for a long time, but it is nevertheless special.
