Ford hints at more historic names for electric cars

Ford does not shy away from dusting off a historic model name for a new electric model. We see that with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It probably won’t stop there.

Ford caused quite a bit of conversation by sticking its possibly most iconic model name ever, Mustang, on a brand new electric car. An SUV too. If you think that’s sacrilege, you might want to look away. It seems that Ford is going down the same road with other well-known old names.

In conversation with coach hint Murat Güler, the head of Ford’s European design division, that Ford won’t be so quick to reach for retro designs for future electric cars. We should therefore not immediately expect an approach such as Renault with the R5 and in a sense Hyundai with the Ioniq 5. According to Güler, Ford envisions a different way to unite the present with the past: “We have a unique opportunity to bring emotion to our products with model names from the past and tell stories that no other brand can tell.” A nice marketing language laced way of saying that old model names are coming back.

That is not unique. Think, for example, of Opel, which returns the Manta name to an SUV that probably only reminds of the old Manta with a strong imagination. Parallel to that approach, it is possible, for example, that Ford will print the Capri name on a ‘sporty’ electric SUV, or call an electric mid-range Sierra. Earlier it also brought the name Puma back to an SUV, while originally it was of course a compact coupe. And what about Thunderbird? In fact, that name has already been re-recorded by Ford, so if that’s not a hint…

Which old Ford name would you like to see returned? Let me know in the comments.
