The current generation of the Ford Mustang logically does not have very long to go. Yet the so-called California Special version of the Mustang Convertible has been spotted with some camouflage material here and there. What is Ford up to?

With an age of eight, the current Ford Mustang clearly does not have a very long life. There are already rumors of an all-new successor, which would appear in 2023. At the beginning of this year, a test mule was spotted that probably had technology from the new Mustang on board. Still, Ford is apparently not quite done with the current one. Last year, Ford pulled the curtain on the Mustang Mach 1 and now there seems to be news in the barrel for the Convertible.

Specifically, this is a Mustang California Special. Its distinguishing elements include a special black grille, a splitter at the bottom of the front bumper, air scoops tightly behind the doors, various badges and a black leather-covered interior with special floor mats and a Bang & Olufsen audio system. In the nose is the same 5.0 Coyote V8 as in the GT. So a special edition, but not as special as, for example, the Bullitt or the Mach 1. Yet Ford is testing this and as the only clear difference with the well-known California Special, we spot the wheels that we know from the Mustang Bullitt on this prototype.

It is not yet clear what exactly Ford is up to. The California Special may become even more intense just before the retirement of the current Mustang is a fact. Perhaps the wheels are a hint and the Mustang California Special also gets the 475 hp power that the Mustang Bullitt had. We’re going to experience it.
