Catch thieves
Local police forces in the United States will soon be able to catch crooks like lightning. Ford presents the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV, a special police version of the F-150 Lightning. This ‘Special Service Vehicle’ entails a number of adjustments.
The Ford F-150 Lightning is not a bad choice for the police. The electric F-150 is one of the fastest pick-ups ever. For the SSV, Ford takes the commercial version of the F-150 Lightning, the Lightning Pro, as a starting point. A big push bar is the main landmark of the police version. Not that the nearly 3,000 kilo Lightning really needed it to ram criminals off the road, but the extra reinforcement is nice. There is of course also a light bar for the blue-white warning lights on the roof, in addition, the Lightning SSV has police stickers on the sides. Also handy: the Pro Power Onboard, with which the F-150 Lightning SSV can supply other electrical devices with power.
Not only is the exterior ready for police work, Ford is also making some adjustments to the interior to make the F-150 Lightning police ready. To start, Ford took out the complete center console and replaced it with a simpler steel one with extra control buttons for, among other things, the lighting and intercom. The large central center armrest also made way for two smaller armrests. In between are two cup holders for the coffee and there is also some space for the donuts. On top of the dashboard, Ford reinforced the tray to be able to mount an extra police screen. The list of adjustments does not end there, because the front seats are covered with reinforced fabric and the rear seats with vinyl. The floor mats are also made of the latter material to make cleaning easier.
Ford offers the police forces two choices when it comes to the powertrain. The basic version of the Lightning Pro SSV has 458 hp and 1,050 Nm of torque and the standard battery. This should allow the officers to travel 370 kilometers. According to Ford, the top version has a power of 588 hp, the torque remains the same. Because the battery of that version is larger – the capacity of both batteries is unknown – the more powerful Lightning will theoretically reach 483 kilometers. That range, especially in combination with the power of the Lightning, should be enough to force most criminals to stop. Ford will deliver the first copies to police forces in 2023.
