Complicated but interesting

Foxconn builds Indi One and is testing Model V

There’s news again about Foxconn’s auto business. The Taiwanese electronics giant is going to build the Indi One of the American Indi EV at Lordstown in Ohio. It also shows the pickup, the Model V, which was developed in-house for the first time.

Sit down, because this is going to be a complicated story. We start with the news surrounding the IndiEV Indi One. That remarkably shaped hatchback was presented in 2021 as the first car from the American IndiEV, a company that wants to develop extremely hip and technologically advanced EVs for a young audience in California. Foxconn, which as an electronics manufacturer knows a thing or two about the production of electronics, is going to build a series of prototypes in Lordstown, Ohio. Since last spring, the Taiwanese giant has owned a factory with a floor area of almost 58 hectares, which once belonged to General Motors. Foxconn took over from Lordstown Motors, which has recently started building its first electric pickup, the Lordstown Endurance. With help from Foxconn, of course.

The deal with IndiEV is not the only Foxconn news, as the Taiwanese company showed recently for the first time his own electric pick-up. That Foxconn Model V had escaped our attention for a while, but we kindly thank Carscoops for the tip. In a teaser video we see a first image of the model, which seems to be quite compact for pick-up terms. It has a fully-fledged double cabin and a sleek, but traditionally shaped body. Soon we will undoubtedly see and hear more.

summarizing

Lost? Don’t worry, that’s not crazy. For an overview, we would like to make an overview of this mush of brands and companies. Foxconn is the international name of a Taiwanese electronics developer and manufacturer, which calls itself the Hon Hai Group in Taiwan and China. Under the name Foxtron, Foxconn has had an automotive division since 2020, which was set up in collaboration with Yulon Motor. That name may sound familiar to you, because Yulon is the company behind the now mythical Yue Loong Feeling, which was also sold in the Netherlands in the 1980s.

Foxtron is involved in the development of electric cars, which are now seen by the Taiwanese as little more than large electronic devices and can therefore be counted as part of the ‘core business’. The goal does not necessarily seem to be setting up your own brand, although that may well change with the arrival of the Model V. However, Foxtron also seriously considers the possibility of developing and building cars for other parties, as it now also makes iPhones for Apple and Playstations for Sony. The prototypes presented earlier must therefore be viewed through those glasses.

In the US, Foxconn, or Foxtron actually, bought the former GM factory of Lordstown Motors last May. In addition to the Lordstown Endurance and IndiEV prototypes, Fisker models are likely to be built here in the future.
