Klavaro is a program that teaches you to type better. It is a free open source tool with an extensive range of typing exercises and that neatly keeps track of your progress. Take a seat behind your keyboard, because we’ll tell you how to get started with this free typing course.

The range of typing courses on the market is large and diverse, but Klavaro is completely free, is open source, runs on Windows and Linux (with a ‘port’ for macOS), allows you to easily adjust the keyboard layout and you can also use your own texts.

On the site of Klavaro you can find the exe file for an installation on Windows (we used version 3.09). The installation only takes a few mouse clicks. When you start Klavaro next, two windows pop up: a ‘dos window’ with some logs (which you can ignore) and the actual program window.

Of course you want to make sure that the keyboard and language are set correctly. You do this from the main menu. Bee Language you probably select Dutch (nl) after which you restart the program if necessary. Then choose the desired keyboard. That is for Belgium Belgium and azerty, for the Netherlands you choose here (adjusted) and then select in the keyboard editor USA and qwerty.

If necessary, you can redefine individual keys by pressing them and entering another character. Finally, you tap (for example) The Netherlands in bij Save as or at Save and use.

Learning to type

You do well to do the 7 steps from heading first 0 – Introduction through. If you choose the optimal approach, you should preferably perform all exercises in sequence, from 1 – Basic course through 2 – Flexibility and 3 – Speed until 4 – Fluency.

For each part you can change the suggested exercise or text yourself. In the basic course you do that by Lesson number and press the button for the other components Lesson information. Also handy: with Speed and Fluency you can use the button Other texts also enter your own practice material, either via the clipboard or from a text file. Once you have completed an exercise, you will receive a (statistical) assessment and some comments.
