French start-up wants to make car batteries by 2023

With the increasing demand for electric cars, more batteries are automatically needed. The French Verkor is a start-up and wants to respond to this question.

Where many battery factories have been built on the other side of the world, according to Automotive News Europe, Verkor plans to ‘just’ set up his factory in home country France. With that, the company could create more than 2,000 jobs. The start-up reportedly needs 500 hectares of land to build its factory. To have the plant up and running by 2023, an investment of € 1.6 billion is required. As a technical partner, Verkor has entered into a partnership with Schneider Electric: a French energy company.

At 85 percent, China has by far the largest share of lithium-ion battery factories. Europe follows a long way so far with a share of only 3 percent. Until now, giants like LG Chem have a factory in Poland and the Chinese CATL is building its own factory in Germany.
