Future for Seat as a car brand? ‘Small EV should be considered’

Although Seat as a traditional car brand seems to be quietly disappearing, CEO Wayne Griffiths doesn’t want to know anything about that yet. According to him, there are still options to introduce new models with a Seat badge.

While the loose Cupra is increasingly profiling itself thanks to all new (mostly electric) models, innovation at Seat is not happening. Yes, a facelift here and there, but that’s about it. New models are not in the pipeline. The current names remain and after that it seems to be done for the Seat that we know. After this decade, Seat seems to be becoming more of a mobility company than a traditional car brand. Wayne Griffiths, the CEO of both Cupra and Seat, now explains, according to the DPA news agency, that it is not yet completely ruled out that new electric models will be released with a Seat badge on them.

Griffiths may see a new role for Seat within the Volkswagen group. “It could take on the role of the affordable entry-level brand for electric cars in the future,” Griffiths said. Seat under Skoda? Who knows. If that is an option, he says it will only be done at a next stage. “For this we need a different electric platform and also cheaper batteries. Then I would like to investigate whether a small electric Seat next to VW and Skoda makes sense in the group’s portfolio.” For the time being, however, it will remain a bit quiet at Seat and the focus is purely on the existing fuel models. “We certainly have until 2035 before we can no longer sell vehicles with emissions. And between now and 2035, many developments will take place.”
