Everyone is on to generative artificial intelligence, but where does that leave Apple? Behind the scenes, Apple is working hard to bring AI to your iPhone.
Generative AI on your iPhone with iOS 18
Apple is known for coming on to a technology a little later than the rest, and then perfecting it to the point where it looks like the company invented it itself. With generative artificial intelligence, that seems unlikely.
First of all, because OpenAI and Google, among others, already have a huge lead in training their AI models and it is doubtful whether Apple can catch up. In addition, OpenAI dares to take more risks, which means that the AI sometimes says strange things, material is used without permission to train the AI and privacy is not of paramount importance. Of course, Apple isn’t looking forward to that.

Apple GPT
It is certain that Apple will do something with generative artificial intelligence. At the company, John Giannandrea heads a team that works on AI models for your iPhone, among other things. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg is specifically working on a ChatGPT competitor.
Internally, the chatbot would be called Apple GPT, but that is of course not the final name for the technology. According to Gurman, Apple is experimenting with improvements to Siri and the generation of texts, images and videos.
More recent Apple research shows that the company is also doing its best to not just catch up, but really innovate. Including via a tool that allows you to animate an image by providing a description. Apple is also working on a way to run AI models locally on an iPhone with limited memory.
First tech in practice
Apple GPT is not really something for the future, because Apple is already testing the technology with its AppleCare employees. They have a chatbot that answers technical questions to help customers.
But what are other possible applications that would also be useful to you as an iPhone user? The following features are very likely.
Siri gets smarter
Siri is a smart assistant that provides pre-programmed answers to questions you need to ask very specifically. That is a big difference with a chatbot based on an AI model, with which you can have a more natural conversation.
Apple probably doesn’t want Siri to talk like ChatGPT in the future, because the company won’t be able to control what Siri says to consumers on Apple’s behalf. It is more likely that the technology is used to better understand your questions. For example, you can ask for the light to be turned on in different ways, or give very complex commands.
Siri could also help better to write messages, which you then approve before you press send. You can then use your Apple Watch, iPhone or even Vision Pro to say what the message should contain, after which Siri turns it into a coherent whole.

In all Apple apps
It is also easy to imagine how generative artificial intelligence will soon be found in virtually every Apple app. You’ll likely soon be able to summarize notes into action items in Notes, or adjust the weather conditions of your vacation snaps in Photos. Also consider quickly generating presentations in Keynote or bringing pictures to life in iMovie.
In time for WWDC and iOS 18?
There are rumors that Apple will unveil the new version of Siri and possibly other generative artificial intelligence applications at WWDC in June and roll out these innovations to users with iOS 18.
It will be exciting to see whether the technology is good enough and, above all, works safely enough. We keep a close eye on developments, so follow iPhoned to stay informed.
