Genesis: ‘very big role for electric in Europe’

Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai, has made a cautious start in Europe. However, with the first European license plates installed, the brand can already make some predictions about the near future on our continent. No surprise: it is largely electric.

In this electric world, the Netherlands is usually one of the introduction countries when a new model is launched. That is different at Genesis, because it has recently started operating in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Not with us yet, but that will change soon.

After barely 600 registered cars, Genesis dares to open up to Automotive News Europe about the registered trends on our continent. For example, the fully and exclusively electric Genesis GV60, which also happens to be the most compact model in the line-up, already accounts for a quarter of the sales.

Genesis also has high hopes for the other EVs that have been announced, the electric versions of the GV70 and the Electrified G80. The GV70, an SUV, is expected to account for thirty percent of electric sales. The GV60 will eventually account for sixty percent, the remaining ten percent is for the G80 sedan.

“Based on what we’ve seen so far, we expect 90 to 95 percent of cars sold next year to be electric,” Andrew Pilkington of Genesis UK told Autonews. Interestingly, he also reports that delivery time plays a major role for many customers: “We have a customer who has ordered four different EVs, from four different brands. He takes the first that can actually be delivered and then cancels the other orders,” says Pilkington.
