‘Don’t just give up’

Genesis wants to serve “orphaned sedan buyers.”

More and more car manufacturers are returning to the trend to mainly build SUVs and emphasize that sedan-types are becoming important again because of the streamline. Genesis is also championing sedans, but for slightly different reasons.

Genesis has a nice and distinct design language of its own, but in another area it turns out to simply go along with existing trends. After all, with the GV80 Coupé Concept, the South Koreans show that they are also going for the SUV with sloping roofline and shamelessly print the label ‘coupé’ on it. Genesis’ design boss Luc Donckerwolke is there like the chickens to make a critical comment on the entire SUV story. According to him, it is important that Genesis does not focus blindly on SUVs and by definition it is allowed to look more at other body shapes. “I don’t just want to see SUVs on the street. I’m sad to see that young designers I meet have sometimes only worked on SUVs and have no sense of proportion,” says the Australian CarExpert on.

The Belgian sees a clean task for Genesis and an opportunity to continue to serve the market with sedans. According to him, it may even give the brand a niche position in the long run. “It’s not that you have to give up one type of car (sedans, ed.) Because the other (SUVs, ed.) is easier to sell. I think those who do that will regret it, because they give it away to others and we’ll be ready.” Genesis has the G70, G80 and G90 in its range and showed with the Speedium X Coupe last year that it is charmed by special coupé lines. The brand might want to venture into a special-lined convertible, a production version of the Genesis X Convertible.
