The first public beta of watchOS 9 is available to download now. In this article we explain how to get the trial version on your Apple Watch. Are you reading along?
This is how you download WatchOS 9
Apple has released the first public beta of watchOS 9. The software adds all kinds of new features, such as fresh watch faces and health functions. Do you want to install this test version? Then you need at least an Apple Watch Series 4. The third generation, which Apple still sells, is therefore no longer available. You also need to run the iOS 16 beta on your iPhone before you can get started.
Success? Then follow the step-by-step plan below:
- On your iPhone, go to the Apple beta website†
- Log in with your Apple ID and associated password;
- Tap the ‘watchOS’ tab;
- Download the beta profile on your iPhone and follow the prompts.
Once this beta is installed, you can update to watchOS 9. To do this, open the Watch app on your watch, go to ‘My Watch’, tap ‘General’ and choose ‘Software Update’. You should see the watchOS 9 beta here.
Note: you are now downloading a test version. Therefore, this software can cause annoying bugs and all sorts of other troubles. It is therefore smart not to install the beta on an Apple Watch that you use every day. In addition, always make a backup of your Apple Watch before updating. This way you are guaranteed not to lose any important data.

As mentioned, Apple is adding new watch faces to your watch with watchOS 9. We especially like the astronomy variant. In addition, your Apple Watch will use the accelerometer and gyroscope to map your pass. He then tells you whether you are walking or running the right way. Finally, with ‘Sleep Stages’ you get a better insight into the different stages of your sleep. Do you want to know more? Check out our extensive article about watchOS 9.
