Google announces it has acquired Raxium, a company that produces microLED screens. According to Google, the acquisition should play an important role in its hardware ambitions. Google is expected to use the screens for augmented reality headsets.
Google makes microLED screens
With the arrival of its Pixel 6 series, Google announced that it has designed an in-house chipset for the phones. The company also developed security chips for Tensor, but this time the company is announcing in a blog post that it will even produce screens.
Google acquires Raxium, a company that has five years of experience with microLED screens. These are small panels with a high resolution. They can be used in headsets for augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) and Xiaomi, for example, uses a microLED panel with its Smart Glasses. Google can also use the screens for smartwatches or other wearables. MicroLED is usually better suited than AMOLED technology if the screen has to be given a special shape or size.
The fact that Google will soon be investing in new AR or VR glasses is not new information either. There were already persistent rumors that Google is working on an AR product. it should be the company’s first AR glasses since the Google Glass from 2013. Google also already has vacancies online that indicate that it is looking for employees who have to build the hardware and software of such a product.
Not the only one
Google isn’t the only tech player venturing into augmented reality glasses. Think of the aforementioned Smart Glasses from Xiaomi, the Ray Ban from Meta, this leaked Samsung project and the recently announced OPPO Air Glass.
