Jaap Eden, full name Jacobus Johannes Eden, was a Dutch skater, cyclist and bandy player. He grew up around Haarlem and played football at HFC Haarlem for some time. He was discovered at the age of fifteen by Klaas Pander, which is why Jaap started skating. At the age of 19 he won his first world speed skating title. After several world titles, Eden decided to try his hand at a cycling career and he succeeded in this too, as he was allowed to take on the title of professional cyclist in 1896.
Today, October 19, 2023, Jaap’s 150th birthday is celebrated: a sports hero to whom we owe the name of our annual Dutch sports awards.
