Google I / O 2021: Android 12 and Wear OS

The annual Google I / O developer conference is over and this year was mainly dominated by Android 12 and Wear OS x Tizen. There were also a few other announcements, which we will briefly list for you in this article!

Android 12

During I / O the latest version of the Android operating system was officially revealed and what immediately stands out is the new look of Android 12. As the name of the new design ‘Material You’ suggests, you can personalize your phone even more . For example, the colors in Android 12 will automatically adjust to the background you have chosen, but you can also adjust the color scheme of your phone in all kinds of ways. According to Google, the operating system would not only be a lot faster, but also more secure thanks to some new security features. The Privacy Dashboard, which gives you an overview of how much insight certain apps have into your personal data, catches the eye.

Wear OS x Tizen

Last week it was announced that Google and Samsung are joining forces for an improved operating system for smart Androidwatches. Basically, it comes down to Google merging its Wear OS with Samsung’s Tizen operating system. This should mean that apps can now start up to 30% faster and that the battery life of smart watches also lasts longer. It also becomes easier for developers to develop apps now that there is one central operating system within the Android ecosystem. Google promises more apps and watch faces will be available for smartwatches.

Project Starline

Google also plans to take video calling to the next level with Project Starline. By means of a kind of mirror with cameras in every corner (Google calls this a chat booth), you can see the person you are video calling with in 3D, making it look like you are actually sitting opposite the other. The technology now requires a lot of cameras, special lighting and above all a lot of space in your living room. Google is now testing Project Starline in various office environments. In this way, the project can be a good way to hold business meetings in the long term, without everyone having to be in the same room.

New in Photos

Google Photos is also getting an update, including the introduction of animated photos. This function is somewhat like the Live Photos of the iPhone and turns two photos into one moving picture. You will also be able to password protect photos on your phone. You will not see them directly in Google Photos, but in a separate, secure section of the app.
