Google Maps gets new features (but not all for the Netherlands)

These new useful features of Google Maps are coming soon, but you can’t use them all in the Netherlands. You need to know this.

Google Maps gets new features

Over the past year, Google has added several AI features to Google Maps. The company is now working on one upgrade of the app with Google Gemini. The purpose of this is that you can ask questions to the AI bot while driving and that navigation is improved.

After the update, you can ask Gemini all kinds of questions while driving. For example, about sights along the route, or about results from other subjects (such as sports or news). You can also have Gemini perform tasks, such as adding an event to your calendar. It is also possible to ask several (follow-up) questions during a conversation.

Not in the Netherlands

Google is also adding a new feature to Maps that combines Gemini with Street View data to improve navigation instructions. You will no longer be told that you have to turn right after 500 meters, but, for example, that you have to turn right after the gas station (which is marked). Google says Gemini compares information from 250 million places with Street View images to identify visible landmarks. This function is currently only available in the US and therefore not in the Netherlands.

Maps will also have the ability to answer questions about your environment by collaborating with Google Lens. So, for example, you can point the camera at an interesting place and ask what the opening hours are. This feature will be available later this month in the US and not yet in the Netherlands.

You can expect the other new Gemini navigation features here and they will appear sometime in the coming weeks. If you don’t want to miss any of this, sign up for our newsletter. We will then automatically keep you informed!
