Gurman: ‘Apple extends micro-LED to the iPhone, iPad and Mac’

According to Mark Gurman, Apple will also bring the new micro-LED screen to the iPhone, iPad and Mac. But when is Apple planning to do this?

Apple introduces its own micro-LED screens

The rumors have been going on for some time: Apple is planning to manufacture screens itself. Earlier it became clear that the company will provide the successor to the Apple Watch Ultra with a micro-LED screen. This screen is made by Apple itself, so the company will probably no longer have screens made by Samsung and LG.

Mark Gurman now confirms the rumors that Apple will come up with its own micro-LED screen. Micro-LED is seen as the better variant of OLED. The big advantage is that the risk of burn-in on these screens is much smaller. Micro-LED lasts longer and is more energy-efficient, so your battery lasts longer.

Micro LED: brighter colors and a wider viewing angle

Apple’s new screens are reportedly getting brighter and brighter colors. The micro-LED screens also have a wider viewing angle. This makes it easier to watch a movie or series on your iPhone together, without anyone seeing the image too brightly. And on your Apple Watch, you can still clearly see the time from the most slanted angle.

The colors of these screens also remain good for a long time. This is the biggest advantage of micro-LED: the quality of the screen is guaranteed and does not deteriorate after a while, as is the case with OLED. Sustainability is such a big advantage of micro LED.

First micro-LED screen expected in 2024

The new version of the Apple Watch Ultra will therefore be Apple’s first device with a micro-LED screen. We expect the second generation Apple Watch Ultra next year, the presentation of the new Ultra will then also be the introduction of Apple’s first own screen. It is expected that Apple will then be the first to bring the micro-LED screen to the iPhone (Pro).

According to Gurman, the big challenge when expanding from micro-LED to multiple devices is the size of the screen. This has to do with the complex technology required to produce the screen and the costs of this production process. For this reason, Apple is first bringing the new screen to the smaller devices.

iPhone, iPad and Mac will follow in the next ten years

Gurman therefore expects that all Apple devices will only be equipped with a micro-LED screen in ten years’ time. The iPhone follows relatively quickly with a micro-LED screen, but more time is needed for the iPad and Mac. For example, Gurman expects the iPhone to use a micro-LED screen for six years before the screen is brought to the iPad.

Don’t feel like waiting so long for the new screens? Apple has already added a new technology to the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max: the always-on function.

As the name suggests, this technique ensures that the screen is always on. Check the best prices in the price comparison for the iPhone 14 Pro and the price comparison for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
