Hemp protein is a plant-based alternative to animal-based products. It can be produced organically in Germany and is considered to be particularly well tolerated.

Hemp protein is suitable for building muscle and is considered a vegan alternative to animal protein sources. Hemp protein is becoming increasingly popular and, alongside pulses, can be a relatively inexpensive source of protein. You can consume it as a powder or in the form of hemp seeds.

Here you will find tips on consumption and the benefits and possible side effects of hemp protein.

Hemp protein: How much protein should I consume per day?

We should consume 0.8 grams of protein every day - one way to achieve this is with hemp proteins.

According to the German Nutrition Society, you should consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. For seniors aged 65 and over, one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight is recommended.

However, if pulses, nuts, seeds, dairy products, eggs, fish or meat are part of your daily diet, it is very unlikely that you are consuming too little protein. According to the consumer advice center, the vast majority of Germans consume significantly more protein than is recommended by the German Nutrition Society. Nevertheless, hemp protein can be a supplement to your diet.

Hemp proteins have advantages over other types of proteins. These include:

  • According to a study, hemp protein has a low allergenic effect: it is extremely unlikely that you will have an allergic reaction to components of the hemp seed. It is also very easy to digest, even though it contains a high proportion of fiber.
  • The formation of bioactive peptides: There are studies that show that some of the hemp proteins are broken down into bioactive peptides by the plant’s own enzymes. These can have antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. They protect our body from free radicals and pollutants from the environment.
  • Hemp protein contains all nine essential amino acids that our body depends on getting from food. These were examined in more detail by scientists in 2023.
  • In addition, studies have shown that hemp proteins are easy to digest and can have a blood pressure-lowering effect.

When taking hemp protein you should always follow these instructions:

  • Our body can only use a limited amount of protein per day. If you consume more than 200 grams of protein per day, it will stimulate your kidneys to work at peak performance. It is not yet clear whether this can be harmful. Too much protein can also lead to constipation.
  • The high fiber content in hemp seeds may cause you to experience bloating.
  • As a dietary supplement, hemp protein is subject to food law and not the strict regulations of a medicinal product. Therefore, only buy it from manufacturers you trust and pay attention to organic quality. This way you avoid your protein powder being contaminated with harmful substances or diluted with inferior protein.

If you feel it is necessary to supplement your diet with additional proteins, hemp protein is definitely a good choice. It can be grown in Germany under organic conditions and, unlike soy protein, does not have to travel long distances. In addition, significantly fewer resources are used to produce hemp protein than are used for animal protein sources. You can add hemp protein to smoothies, muesli or porridge, for example.

Buy: Organic hemp protein is available online, for example from Vom Achterhof, Ölmühle Solling or Amazon
