Just like in Microsoft Become it is very easy to find out in Google Docs how many words, characters and pages the document contains. It is even possible to display the word counter permanently in real time.
Step 1: Number of words
With a few mouse clicks you will find the number of words in the document in Google Docs. Click on the menu at the top Additional and select A number of words. You can also enter the key combination Ctrl + Shift + C Windows or Cmd + Shift + C in macOS. A small window shows how many pages the file consists of, how many words it contains, the number of characters and the number of characters without space. click on OK to close this window. You can also use the word counter function to count the number of words and characters in a selected text fragment. Select the text for which you want to see these numbers by clicking the left mouse button and dragging the cursor. The text is then shaded. Then you use the command A number of words. In the pop-up window you can read the result in two numbers: the first number refers to the selection, the second to the full number of words or characters in the document. For example, 25 of 437 words, or 214 characters of 2008 characters.
Step 2: Real-time word counter
Very useful is the real-time word counter that you can add to the document window. This tracker means you don’t have to go to the menu every time Additional to open. You activate this word counter by clicking in the window of A number of words ticking an option: Display number of words while typing. Keep in mind that you have to enable this box for every document you create or edit. You cannot enable this option by default for all documents.
Step 3: Mobile
You can of course also have words in Google Docs counted on your mobile phone or tablet. Open the document in the Google Docs app and tap the three dots in the top right corner. There, select the Word Count command so that you can see the same information for the entire document. As with the desktop version, you can also request the numbers of a text selection. Unfortunately, Google Sheets and Google Slides don’t have a built-in word or character count feature.
