Here’s how to set the default browser in Windows 11

In Windows 10 you can set your default browser with a few clicks, but in Windows 11 there is something more involved. The process has become less cumbersome since the Windows update that recently appeared. In this article we explain how to set a default browser in Windows 11.

If you have just installed Windows 11 on your PC, you can’t ignore Edge, the browser from Microsoft itself. Although Edge runs on Google’s Chromium and thus somewhat resembles Chrome, you may prefer to actually use Google’s browser. Or of course any of the other popular browsers.

That’s how you do that

To in Windows 11 To set a default browser, open the Settings app. You can do this directly by using the combination Windows+i on your keyboard.

In the Settings go to apps and click Default apps. In the search bar below Application Defaults Settings look for your favorite browser, for example Chrome or Firefox. Can’t find the browser? It is possible that you have not yet installed the browser (correctly) on your computer. Try (re)installing the browser and see if you can find it in the list.

Once you’ve found the browser, you’ll be taken to a window where you can set all sorts of default file or link types, including .htm, .html, or .shtml. If you have selected Chrome, you will see the option at the top of the window Set Google Chrome as your default browser. When you press the button Set default click, you will see that all listed file and link types will open in Chrome by default.

With the click of a button you can set a default browser.

Update Windows

There’s a small chance that you haven’t downloaded the March Windows update (update KB5011563) yet, so you won’t see the option to set a default browser. You will then only see the overview of all standard file or link types, so that you must individually indicate per type with which browser you want to open a file or link. And that is quite cumbersome.

So update your PC to the latest Windows version and the problem should be solved. An updated PC is also so safe!

In Windows 10 By the way, setting a default browser works in a similar way. In the Settings app, go to System / Default apps and choose at web browser in front of Chrome, Firefox or another browser.
