Here’s what to do if your camera doesn’t work in Windows 11

Do you regularly use a webcam or the camera in your laptop? Then of course you want it to work properly. It sometimes happens that the camera has problems. The PC does not recognize the webcam, or you may only see a black image. In Windows 11, there are some steps you can take to resolve your camera issues.

First of all, make sure you have connected your camera correctly and that it is recognized in Windows 11. You can check this by going to Device Manager to go. In this window you should see the heading Camera must see. When you click on it, you should see your camera or webcam. You now know that the camera is properly connected.

Not recognized?

Is your camera not listed? Then try to remove it from the USB port and plug it in again. This may already solve the problem. Check whether you are running the latest version of your camera software and update the software if necessary. Optionally, you can also uninstall and reinstall the software to see if this resolves the issue. If the camera still does not work, it may be broken and there is little other option than to buy a new one.

Recognized?

If your camera is recognized by your system, there may be something wrong with the privacy settings. You may need to give your PC permission to use the camera. To do this, go to the Startmenu and type in the search bar Camera privacy settings. In this menu, make sure the slider is on On stands next to Camera access. This will give your camera access to your system.

In the same window you will also find the option Allow apps to access your camera. Here you can see which apps can use the camera. If the slider is turned off for, for example, Zoom or Skype, this may explain why the camera does not work in these apps. Set the slider for the relevant app to On and restart the program.

Your camera may not be able to access your system.

Update drivers

Finally, if you still experience problems, you can also update the driver of your camera. You do this again in the window Device Manager. Find your camera again in the list and right click on it. In the menu that appears, click on Update driver to check for new updates and choose Automatic driver search. If there are updates, they will be automatically downloaded and installed by Windows.
