It doesn’t get any crazier: it is now illegal to use the iPhone 16 in Indonesia. But why exactly?
The iPhone 16 is now illegal in Indonesia
Have you just bought a new iPhone 16 and are you planning to go on holiday? Then you have to be careful, because the iPhone 16 is now illegal in Indonesia. But it’s not just the iPhone 16 that is now banned. Other Apple devices released this fall may also no longer be used. It is therefore better not to have an Apple Watch Series 10 with you in the country.
The ban on the iPhone 16 focuses on sales and use. iPhones that have already been sold are now also considered illegal. Gumiwang Kartasasmita (Minister of Industry) recently said that any functioning iPhone 16 spotted in the country is illegal.
The reason for the iPhone ban is a bit strange. The country wants to force Apple to fulfill their investment promise. Apple has pledged $109 million to invest in the country for infrastructure and local production, according to the country. According to the country, they have only invested $95 million.
The investments are an obligation. Indonesia requires foreign companies to ensure that a certain amount of the materials they use are produced in the country. Apple had previously promised to build research and development facilities in Indonesia, under the name Apple academies.
It is not yet known what Apple plans to do to lift the ban. Until then, the iPhone 16 remains illegal in Indonesia.
