Less bad than it looks
Attention children from the 80s and 90s, there is a piece of youth sentiment for sale! There is a replica of Bassie and Adriaan’s Honda Prelude for sale. Just one with a bit of a dark edge.
Whole groups of people in their twenties and thirties will undoubtedly jump at the sight of this Honda Prelude from 1986. It is in fact one of the cars in which Bassie and Adriaan and robot friend Robin used to move. The Simca-Matra Rancho of the famous clown and acrobat made way in the 90s for the characteristic Prelude with eyes on the flip-up headlights. Bassie and Adriaan’s could even wink. This Prelude probably can’t do that, but there is more that doesn’t quite match Bassie and Adriaan’s car.
The Prelude in question looks as if it has stood still unattended in the open air for years. Don’t be alarmed, because that is nothing more than ‘clean’ appearances. The Prelude has not only been transformed into Bassie and Adriaan’s car, but also immediately one that seems to belong in a previously unpublished horror film by the two. Under this wrap is a neater Prelude.
The Honda Prelude in action in 2020 AutoWeek Classics 11
We not only read that in the advertisement, but we also know it first hand. In AutoWeek Classics issue 11 from 2020, we sniffed at this Prelude ourselves and at a flawless Bassie and Adriaan replica from the same owner. He then told us: “I promised myself as an eight-year-old that I would buy one. Now I even have two. The other, with automatic, I have a so-called rat looktreatment given. The paint of this anthracite-colored Prelude wasn’t like that anymore shiny, so the trip to the rat-look specialist was made in no time. It has given the car a very nice patina look. I couldn’t resist giving this one a B&A trim as well. So I have more or less two identical Preludes.”
The flawless replica would have delivered the owner €24,000, but now the rat-lookversion gone. But for a much cheaper price. The asking price for this copy is ‘only’ €5,800. That is admittedly a lot of money for a 36 year old Prelude, but hey, they are hard to find anymore, let alone in such a special jacket. Undoubtedly, someone can be found who is willing to do it. There is also a Robin and the AutoWeek Classics in which this car and its neater brother shone.
