Honda has rolled out a recall for the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. Under certain driving conditions, the exhaust bend can become so hot that the adjacent oil cooler pipe can melt and cause oil leakage.
Honda received the first report of an oil leak in the oil cooler pipe on July 29, 2021. After receiving several reports, an investigation was started in September 2021. A month later, the first reports also came from Europe.
Further analysis and testing showed an increase in the temperature of the oil cooler pipes under certain conditions, such as when driving behind a vehicle for a long time. Under those circumstances, there appeared to be too little airflow (and therefore cooling) towards the exhaust bend.
In November 2021, Honda received an initial report from the United States, where a rider on the highway found smoke from the engine block, but came to a safe stop. Then he saw that the engine was leaking oil.
Honda now has a recall for all CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP engines manufactured between April 28, 2020 and October 4, 2021. A heat shield will be mounted between the exhaust bend and the pipe of the oil cooler, which should solve the problem. Honda advises riders not to exceed 5,000 rpm in first gear until such time (that the recall has been completed).
