Honda to build battery factory in United States

Honda and LG will build a battery factory for electric cars in the United States. The factory should be operational by the end of 2025 and the first battery packs will leave the factory gates.

The Honda E is currently the only electric car in Europe that you can buy from Honda, but next year the brand will also bring an electric equivalent of the HR-V to the European market. On an international level, Honda’s EV ambitions are already a lot bigger. Honda has embraced US giant General Motors and aims to produce ‘millions’ of electric cars annually from 2027 for the North American, South American and Chinese markets. Honda’s upcoming EVs will of course also need battery packs. A large part of those packages will soon come from the United States.

Honda, together with LG Energy Solution, is establishing a joint venture that will start in 2023 with the construction of a factory in the United States where it will build battery packs. The production plans involve an investment of approximately €4 billion. The factory should produce 40 GWh of batteries annually and should be operational by the end of 2025.

The first concrete automotive fruit of the collaboration between General Motors and Honda will be the Prologue. That SUV will enter the American market in 2024 and, according to Honda, will use the so-called Ultium batteries from General Motors. After the Prologue, other EVs from Honda and General Motors will follow, including for the North American market.
