Honda to shut down British Civic production ahead of schedule

Honda’s announced departure from Britain appears to be coming sooner for some models than others. The Japanese Nikkei reports that Honda will withdraw production of one specific model from Swindon as early as next year.

For some time now, there has been plenty to do around Honda’s factory in Swindon, UK. Rumors had been buzzing in the corridors for a while, until Honda released its own statement at the beginning of last year: it is closing its British factory. Honda’s ‘Brexit’ is scheduled for 2022. The Nikkei now reports that the Brexit will take place earlier for some models than for others, as it reports that Honda will stop British production of the Honda Civic in 2021.

The production line would be relocated from Swindon to Yorii in the northwest of Tokyo, Japan. This means that the model that is most produced in Swindon will sooner, because of the approximately 160,000 Hondas that are built annually, 100,000 of the cases are Civic. As soon as the factory finally closes its doors, 3,500 employees end up on the street.
