How does the heart work, with the oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood?

Asker: Demis , 14 years

Answer

Dear Demis,

The heart works with oxygenated blood.

The blood arrives in the heart with low oxygen levels via the superior and inferior vena cava; then it goes to the lungs to get oxygen. The oxygenated blood then travels to the left side of the heart and is propelled from there through the aorta. The first branches of the aorta are the coronary arteries which will supply the heart with oxygen.
