Three-cylinder turbo or 1.2 four-cylinder?

The Hyundai i20 challenges cars like the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta in the B segment. Does it also do that with pleasantly low fuel consumption? Tank receipts from real users in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor provide the answer.
The third generation Hyundai i20, which we will cover in this article, made its appearance in 2014. The model was available with several petrol engines. The 1.0 T-GDI is a three-cylinder turbo engine with 100 hp, an unblown 1.2 four-cylinder was also supplied. There are two power variants of this engine, the 1.2 LP (Low Power) with 75 and the 1.2 HP (High Power) with 84 hp. The tractive force is the same in both cases: 122 Nm.
Consumption 1.0 T-GDI 100
The 1.0 T-GDI appears most often in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. With this engine, owners consume an average of 1 in 15.5 (6.5 l/100 km). The two most economical drivers record 1 in 18.3 (5.5 l/100 km) over distances of almost 60,000 and 23,000 kilometers. The most inefficient driver ‘does’ 1 in 13.1 (7.6 l/100 km), but stopped keeping track of consumption fairly quickly. The second highest value is 1 in 14 (7.2 l/100 km), measured over a distance of 26,062 kilometres.
Is the 1.2 more economical?
Then the turboless four-cylinder, of which we lump the LP and HP version together. The extra power of the second does not stand in the way of favorable consumption, because the most economical 1.2 driver has an HP variant. With that, he has been driving an average of 1 to 17.8 (5.6 l/100 km) for more than 83,000 km. The least economical i20 1.2 is an LP, with which the owner traveled 24,000 km with a consumption of 1 to 16.1 (6.2 l/100 km). The average for both 1.2 versions is 1:17 (5.9 l/100 km).
Those looking for an economical Hyundai i20 should opt for a 1.2 four-cylinder. This does not deliver the smooth performance of the three-cylinder turbo, but it does allow a favorable consumption to be noted more easily. A – newer – Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI with 95 hp is in practice considerably more economical than the Hyundai. The Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost also shows more favorable consumption values.
