In this tip, we’ll show you how to find and remove duplicate songs in iTunes. This way you save storage and your computer becomes faster.
How to remove iTunes duplicate songs
Over time, your iTunes library can become quite full. An easy way to save some storage space is to delete duplicate songs in iTunes. This cleans your iMac or MacBook, and therefore faster.
Here’s how to track down duplicate songs in iTunes:
- Open iTunes;
- Click on ‘Library’ under ‘File’ in the top left corner;
- Select ‘Show duplicate parts’ here.
You now have a list of all (possible) duplicate numbers from your collection. The program searches for combinations of artists and songs, and does this by means of tags. For example, the tags of a song tell you which album it came from and how long it lasts. You will find these tags under ‘Edit’ and then ‘Info number’. Especially when you download a lot of albums, these tags can sometimes be badly ordered.
Remove duplicate numbers
Because of this, you may get two versions of one song, for example the live and studio version. So check the list of results for a moment and decide which numbers you want to keep. In the next step you are going to delete numbers.
This is how you remove duplicate numbers:
- Select one or more songs you want to delete;
- Delete one or more songs by clicking on ‘Delete from library’ under the ‘Songs’ menu;
- Click the button at the top right to indicate that you are ready.
