How to set line and paragraph spacing in Word

In Word, sometimes a blank line appears below typed text. This white space prevents lines from sticking together. Users occasionally have trouble setting the spacing between lines and paragraphs. Still, the white space plays an important role in the readability of the document. That’s why we explain how line spacing works in Word.

Step 1: Hard or soft

There is a difference between line spacing and paragraph spacing. A line is the text that fits on one line. So it is not a sentence, but a line. A paragraph is a piece of text that belongs together in content and consists of at least one sentence, but in most cases of more. Often a blank line follows before the new paragraph begins.

Line spacing is the spacing between each line, so this spacing is much more common than paragraph spacing. You create a new paragraph by pressing Enter or return to push. There is then an empty line between the paragraphs. We call this a hard Enter/Return.

If you want to end a paragraph without white space, you must enter a soft Enter/Return place, with Shift+Enter/Return. The text then moves to a new line, but remains in the same paragraph.

With the Hidden characters you can clearly see the difference between a hard and a soft Enter/Return.

Step 2: Set line spacing

There are several ways to set the spacing between the lines. The almost fastest way is with the button Line spacing in the group Paragraph from the tab Start. By default, the line spacing is 1.15 and you can increase or decrease it in steps.

It also works with keyboard shortcuts. Of Ctrl+1 jumps the selected text at 1 line spacing Ctrl+2 gives a control position 2 and Ctrl+5 creates a line spacing of one and a half. Use the number keys above the letter keys. Of Ctrl+Shift+N do you fit the style Default with a distance of 1.15.

It is possible that you will get a document on the screen with line spacing with line spacing of 1.08. This was the default in older versions of Become. You can see this from the tab Start in the group Paragraph where you Line spacing options… opens.

You can adjust the line spacing in steps.

Step 3: Paragraph Properties

How much white space Word places between paragraphs depends on the paragraph properties. Select the text and click in the ribbon in the tab Start at the group Paragraph on the arrow pointing down to the right. In the window Paragraph you can adjust all properties of a paragraph. For example, if you measure the distance 0 For and 12 Na you will see that the space under a paragraph increases.

Bee Line spacing you have several options. Select you Single, then the spacing between the lines does not increase. choose you Multiple, then you can use some kind of percentage. If you enter 1.15 here, the line spacing will be 15% increased. Bee 2 doubles the line spacing.

The new spacing is applied only to the paragraph where the mouse pointer is. If you want to apply that option to multiple paragraphs, you must first select it. There is also a telling box Don’t add white space between paragraphs with the same style.

This allows more white space after a new paragraph.
